I’ve done a few podcast interviews lately, and one of the most common questions is, “What Does It Take To Succeed As A Real Estate Investor?”
In my opinion, there are two essential traits to succeeding as a real estate investor: Endurance & Grit.
Endurance: Continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition. The willingness to show up day in and day out to fight for something that you want, no matter how long it takes or what life throws in your way.
(This is why I named my company “Duratus,” which means “to endure” in Latin)
Grit: Firmness of mind and spirit; unyielding courage in the face of hardship or danger. The strength to show up day in and day out and do the little things required to achieve a goal.
Contrary to what you might hear from many real estate investing “gurus,” real estate investing is NOT quick or easy.
While the basics of real estate investing are relatively simple to learn, success does not come easy.
There is a steep initial learning curve that usually involves losing money, blowing timelines, and several tough lessons learned as you master a new investing strategy and learn your market. However, those who persevere and learn from their mistakes usually always find compounding success year over year.
As I have said in other blog posts, real estate investing is the LONG-TERM path to wealth, and if you approach it knowing that you are entering into a 10+ year endeavor, you are much more likely to endure and succeed.
I have learned and grown so much over the past 6.5 years, and I am blessed to say that I am well on my way to achieving all of the big goals that I set at the beginning of my investing journey. However, as you know if you listen to my podcast, I have had MANY tough lessons learned, and I STILL make mistakes and learn important lessons every day.
When I encounter challenges, I use many the strategies that I learned as a Marine to help me keep going:
#1 - Remember my Mission: To be an enduring and dominant privately held real estate company in Alabama
It is my job to make sure we accomplish this mission. No Matter What.
#2 - Remember my Purpose: To do all that we can with all we’ve been given
I have been blessed beyond measure and given so much, so it is my responsibility to make the most of every opportunity and ability God has given me
#3 - Lean on my Teammates: Together with my business partner and team, I know that we can overcome anything and do anything we set our minds to.
It also helps to remember that I am responsible for each of my 7 team members and their families' livelihoods, so there is no option ever to give up
Becoming a real estate investor is one of the best choices that I have made in my life, and I think it is a great option that more people should consider. However, this path is not without its challenges, and it requires a substantial amount of grit and endurance to succeed.
Do you have what it takes?
